What is website accessibility?

Website accessibility is about making website content available to all users, particularly those with disabilities, including visual, auditory, physical, speech, cognitive, and neurological disabilities regardless of their browsing technology.

How we have made our website accessible

We are committed to making our website accessible to as many people as possible. The site is designed to meet all double-A (AA) accessibility checkpoints defined by the World Wide Web Consortium's (W3C) Web Accessibility Initiative (WAI).

The measures we have taken to make sure our website is accessible include:

  • using relative font sizes to allow users to change the size of text on the page;
  • using alternative text for all images on our website;
  • using valid XHTML on all our web pages;
  • conducting regular validation checks to ensure the HTML code of our web pages is valid;
  • running regular spot checks of our pages against accessibility testing tools and fix any errors.

Accessibility issues

If you experience problems accessing any of the information on our site, please contact our web team, whose contact details you can find on the right hand side of this page, and we will try our best to fix the problem or provide the information in an alternative format.

We are aware of the following accessibility issues that we are working to improve:

  • PDF and Word documents on this site may not be fully accessible. If you are unable to read a document hosted on the site, please contact us and we will try to supply a plain text version.

The BBC's My Web, My Way website, which you can find on the right hand side of the page, is a useful resource for anyone who has difficulty browsing the internet. The site explains the many ways you can change your browser, computer, keyboard and mouse settings to make the web more accessible to you.
